Saw Palmetto for Men: Prostate Health and Circulation

← Back to Blog

Saw Palmetto is probably the most researched ingredient in HorseWood's formula, with decades of study focused on men's urinary and prostate health specifically.

What It's Best Known For

Saw Palmetto berry extract has the most consistent research base around benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — the non-cancerous prostate enlargement common in older men — and the urinary symptoms that come with it. A 2012 Cochrane systematic review of Serenoa repens (Saw Palmetto) trials found mixed results: some individual studies and higher-dose extracts showed symptom improvement over placebo, while a subset of larger, well-controlled trials did not find a significant difference.

Why It's Relevant to Blood Flow and Performance

Prostate and urinary health sit close to the same anatomical and vascular systems involved in male sexual performance, which is part of why Saw Palmetto is a common inclusion in formulas built around this angle — even though its strongest research is prostate-specific rather than a direct blood-flow claim.

Saw Palmetto works alongside Horny Goat Weed and Tongkat Ali in HorseWood.

The Libido/Testosterone Connection Is Weaker

Saw Palmetto has a mild effect on 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme involved in converting testosterone to DHT. In practice, the direct human evidence for a broader performance benefit from Saw Palmetto alone is much thinner than its prostate research.

The Bottom Line

Saw Palmetto is one of the better-evidenced ingredients in HorseWood's formula, with its strongest (if mixed) data pointing at prostate and urinary symptom support — a legitimate, useful role in a men's health formula.
